Not surprisingly, this portico is considered the first example of <em>Mediterranean Architecture<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The interior reflects the many changes made over the centuries, and of particular interest is the <strong>Crypt<\/strong>, which houses the remains of Saint Matthew, one of the four Evangelists and the patron saint of Salerno.<\/p>\n<p>Remodelled in Baroque style at the beginning of the 17th century, the crypt is frescoed with scenes from the Gospel of Matthew and episodes from Salerno\u2019s history. Returning to the main street, when the road narrows into an alley, you enter the oldest part of Salerno: <strong>Via dei Mercanti<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>No more than five metres wide, Via dei Mercanti has been Salerno\u2019s main commercial street since the Lombard period. It was called Drapparia because it was home to shops selling drappi, or fabrics.<\/p>\n\n<p>Along Via dei Mercanti are <strong>Palazzo Pinto<\/strong>, with the <strong>Municipal Art Gallery<\/strong>, and, about halfway along, the <strong>Cathedral<\/strong>, just a short distance away \u2014 see point 1.<\/p>\n<p>During the Christmas period, like all of Salerno, Via dei Mercanti is also decorated with Luci d\u2019Artista \u2014 see point 7. Several streets are particularly characteristic: Via Botteghelle, Via dei Barbuti and Vicolo della Neve. According to legend, the School was born on a stormy night beneath the arches of Salerno\u2019s aqueduct, where its four founders are said to have met by chance: the Arab Adela, the Greek Ponto, the Jew Elino and the Latin Salerno.<\/p>\n\n<p>In the centre of Salerno, the <strong>Garden of Minerva<\/strong>, which the Salerno Medical School used to teach students the use of medicinal herbs, is perfectly preserved and open to visitors.<\/p>\n<p>For this reason, it is considered the first of all the botanical gardens later created in Europe.
