It is not a stopover destination to be dismissed with a quick walk around the centre: <strong>it is a beautiful Italian city<\/strong>, rich in <strong>important monuments<\/strong>, several <strong>churches<\/strong> not to be missed, an <strong>excellent museum<\/strong> and a <strong>cuisine<\/strong> that everyone should try at least once in their lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>Start your visit from <strong>Piazza del Duomo<\/strong>, one of the most beautiful \u2014 though less well-known \u2014 squares in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Not far away is the <strong>Palazzo della Pilotta<\/strong>, which allows you to visit two masterpieces in one go: the <strong>Teatro Farnese<\/strong> and the <strong>National Gallery<\/strong>, with works by <strong>Fra Angelico<\/strong>, <strong>Leonardo da Vinci, Guercino, El Greco, Tintoretto, Tiepolo, Van Dyck<\/strong> and many others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Correggio<\/strong> and <strong>Parmigianino<\/strong> deserve a separate mention. Begun around 1100, in 1526 <strong>Correggio<\/strong> created an extraordinary cycle of frescoes in the great dome, inspired by the theme of <em>the Assumption of the Virgin<\/em>. The other protagonist of the square is the <strong>Baptistery<\/strong>, built by Benedetto Antelami at the end of the 12th century.<\/p>\n<p>Where it stands there was once a stream that served to feed the large internal baptismal font. <strong>The exterior of the Baptistery<\/strong> is made of pink marble from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.10cose.it\/en\/verona\/what-to-see-verona\"><strong>Verona<\/strong><\/a>, with an <strong>octagonal shape<\/strong> \u2014 eight being the day of Christ\u2019s Resurrection \u2014 and decorated with a <strong>zoophorus<\/strong>, a large band featuring real and imaginary animals.<\/p>\n\n<p>The whole <strong>exterior<\/strong> is a story told through images: the life of Jesus and Mary, John the Baptist, death and resurrection, just as the decorations of the <strong>interior<\/strong> dome depict Jerusalem after the end of the world, with the apostles and evangelists. An unmissable masterpiece. The last protagonist of the square is the <strong>Bishop\u2019s Palace<\/strong>, today the bishop\u2019s residence and home to the <strong>Diocesan Museum<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The museum route follows a chronological path through the history of Christianity in Parma. The main figure in the museum is the sculptor Antelami, to whom it is dedicated. From outside, visitors can access the <strong>Monastery<\/strong>, with its <strong>four cloisters<\/strong>, and above all the wonderful <strong>Pharmacy<\/strong> \u2014 or spezieria \u2014 of San Giovanni. Active only for the monks from 1201, it represents a true journey through the history of medicine.<\/p>\n\n<p>In the <strong>first room, called the \u201cFire Room\u201d<\/strong>, you can still see the ancient counters used for sales and the scales used to weigh ingredients preserved in ceramic and wooden jars. In the <strong>second room \u2014 the Mortar Room<\/strong>, herbs and minerals were prepared. The <strong>third room \u2014 the Sirens Room<\/strong> contains valuable medical publications. So, when the bridegroom arrived, the foolish virgins had gone to buy more oil. The <strong>Teatro Farnese<\/strong> was built between 1616 and 1618 in the southern wing, and was intended by Duke Ranuccio I Farnese to celebrate the stay in Parma of Cosimo II de\u2019 Medici. It was a real disaster.
