The powerful octagonal dome, the twin towers and the elegant Untersberg marble fa\u00e7ade decorated with statues of bishops and saints characterise this monumental construction.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2443\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2443\" style=\"width: 375px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2443 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.10cose.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/duomo-salisburgo.jpg\" alt=\"Salzburg Cathedral\" width=\"375\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.10cose.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/duomo-salisburgo.jpg 375w, https:\/\/www.10cose.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/duomo-salisburgo-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2443\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Salzburg Cathedral<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Founded in 767 by Bishop Virgil in honour of Saints Rupert and Virgil, the patrons of the region, <strong>the cathedral was destroyed and rebuilt, enlarged and modified several times.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Its current form, dating from the first half of the 17th century, is the work of the Italian architect Santino Solari, who made it the first early Baroque sacred building north of the Alps.<\/p>\n<p>Severely damaged by bombs during the Second World War, <strong>the church returned to its splendour in 1959<\/strong> thanks to restoration work that rebuilt the dome and part of the presbytery destroyed during the bombings of 1944.<\/p>\n\n<p>The <strong>grand interior, accessed through three bronze portals<\/strong> symbolising faith, hope and charity, has a single nave flanked by four side chapels embellished with stuccoes and paintings.<\/p>\n<p>The polychrome decorations of the dome, with scenes from the life and Passion of Christ, and Mascagni\u2019s Resurrection altarpiece on the high altar are beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>Do not miss the <strong>splendid main organ surrounded by little angels<\/strong> holding musical instruments, and the Romanesque baptismal font (1321) where Mozart was baptised.<\/p>\n<p>In the crypt are the <strong>tombs of the prince-archbishops<\/strong> and the remains of earlier buildings. In the past, it was used to announce the opening and closing of the fortress gates.
