In summer, it becomes a fun way to cool your feet, especially loved by children.<\/p>\n\n<p>Place de la Bourse was built in 1749 and <strong>was named Place Royale<\/strong> because it was a tribute from the people of Bordeaux to the King of France. At the first opportunity, 40 years later, the revolutionaries knocked the King\u2019s statue off his horse and renamed it Place de la Libert\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>After several changes, in 1869 it became Place de la Bourse. At the centre stands a <strong>beautiful fountain with 3 female figures<\/strong>: according to some, they represent the rivers Garonne, Dordogne and Gironde; according to others, the Three Graces; and according to others still, three French princesses. google_fonts=&#8221;font_family:Open%20Sans%3A300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C600%2C600italic%2C700%2C700italic%2C800%2C800italic|font_style:600%20bold%20regular%3A600%3Anormal&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1441123033394{background-position: 0 0 !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;}&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<span class=\"dropcap\" style=\"background-color: #c60c0c;\">2<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The most important religious monument in Bordeaux, the Cathedral, was built in 1096 at the request of Pope Urban II.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3133\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3133\" style=\"width: 375px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3133\" src=\"https:\/\/www.10cose.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cattedrale-sant-andrea-bordeaux.jpg\" alt=\"Saint-Andr\u00e9 Cathedral in Bordeaux\" width=\"375\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.10cose.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cattedrale-sant-andrea-bordeaux.jpg 375w, https:\/\/www.10cose.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cattedrale-sant-andrea-bordeaux-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3133\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Saint-Andr\u00e9 Cathedral in Bordeaux<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The beauty of this building lies in its <strong>majesty<\/strong> \u2014 124 metres long and 23 metres high \u2014 and, above all, in the <strong>five chapels that radiate outwards<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For a series of historical reasons, the Cathedral\u2019s main fa\u00e7ade is Romanesque, and therefore very simple, while the most beautiful fa\u00e7ade is the northern one, with the <strong>Royal Portal<\/strong> embellished with bas-reliefs depicting <strong>the Last Supper, the Ascension and the Triumph of the Redeemer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On this side of the Cathedral rise <strong>two twin towers 81 metres high<\/strong>. <strong>The interior of the Cathedral is not of great interest<\/strong>, except for the Choir.<\/p>\n<p>But even the sober interior has a historical explanation: it was imposed by Geoffrey Loroux (1135-1158), bishop of Bordeaux, who established the strict Augustinian rule, while the other parts reflect the different historical periods in which they were added or remodelled.<\/p>\n<p>In the Cathedral square stands the <strong>very tall bell tower dedicated to Pey-Berland, the archbishop of Bordeaux<\/strong> who founded the city\u2019s first university around 1440.
