This is a city that has always been inhabited, a city where, from the Palaeolithic age to the present day, you can retrace the history of humankind, which settled here discreetly, using the resources of the land and integrating perfectly with it, without violating it.<\/p>\n<p>Matera is a unique city, an extraordinary and timeless place. It is the city of the famous <strong>Sassi<\/strong>, the first site in southern Italy to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, of its many <strong>rock-hewn churches<\/strong>, of <strong>natural areas<\/strong> that include different habitats inhabited by various animal and plant species, of rural traditions and landscapes of incomparable beauty.<\/p>\n<p>But Matera is also a city of hidden treasures, <strong>museums<\/strong>, festivals, concerts and multimedia itineraries.<\/p>\n<p>On 17 October 2014, the city of the Sassi was designated <strong><strong>European Capital of Culture for 2019<\/strong><\/strong>: an important victory for a land often forgotten, which could finally free itself forever from the sad definition of \u201cnational shame\u201d. Naturally, they are also the first thing to see as soon as you set foot in the city.<\/p>\n<p>This ancient settlement, built into the tufa rock on the side of the Gravina ravine, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.<\/p>\n<p>The distinctive <strong>interweaving of caves used as homes, winding alleys, rock-hewn churches, terraces, gardens and underground tunnels<\/strong> makes the Sassi a spectacular example of an architectural complex perfectly adapted to its natural setting \u2014 a place to see at least once in a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>This enormous sculpture bears witness, from the distant Palaeolithic past onwards, to the way people lived in caves, alongside which, from the Middle Ages on, more modern houses were built above ground.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2197\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2197\" style=\"width: 375px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2197\" src=\"https:\/\/www.10cose.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/sassi-matera.jpg\" alt=\"The Sassi of Matera\" width=\"375\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.10cose.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/sassi-matera.jpg 375w, https:\/\/www.10cose.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/sassi-matera-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2197\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Sassi of Matera<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For this reason, <strong>the Sassi represent a landscape unlike any other<\/strong>, a destination for fascinated travellers and inspired filmmakers.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, in the 1950s and 1960s, the Sassi were considered a \u201cnational shame\u201d because of the poor hygienic conditions and overcrowding in the cave-houses, to the point that they were abandoned and left in a state of near-total ruin.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, after about thirty years, conservation and restoration work began on these forgotten jewels, which at sunset take on a magical glow and offer breathtaking views.<\/p>\n<h3>Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso<\/h3>\n<p>The Sassi are divided into two districts: <strong>Sasso Barisano<\/strong>, the larger district, whose houses today mostly accommodate shops, restaurants and hotels, and <strong>Sasso Caveoso<\/strong>, considered the oldest district and the one that best preserves the appearance of the rock-hewn city.<\/p>\n<h3>Casa Noha<\/h3>\n<p>Before setting out to explore the ancient stone districts, it can be useful to make a first stop at <strong>Casa Noha, the first FAI property in Basilicata<\/strong>. In this old residence, once belonging to the now-extinct noble Noha family and recently transformed into a tourist information and documentation centre, you can watch the film \u201c<em>The Invisible Sassi. Since 1627, the cathedral has been dedicated to the Madonna della Bruna and Saint Eustace, protectors of the city.<\/p>\n<p>The fa\u00e7ade of this Apulian Romanesque building features a <strong>beautiful richly decorated portal<\/strong> surmounted by the statue of the <strong>Madonna della Bruna<\/strong>, and an imposing 16-rayed rose window, symbolising the wheel of life, topped by the Archangel Michael crushing the dragon and surrounded by two male figures at the sides and another below serving as an atlas.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2194\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2194\" style=\"width: 375px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2194\" src=\"https:\/\/www.10cose.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/cattedrale-matera.jpg\" alt=\"Matera Cathedral\" width=\"375\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.10cose.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/cattedrale-matera.jpg 375w, https:\/\/www.10cose.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/cattedrale-matera-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2194\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Matera Cathedral<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On the side <strong>fa\u00e7ade<\/strong> of the cathedral are two smaller portals: the \u201cPorta di Piazza\u201d, decorated with a bas-relief depiction of Abraham, and the \u201cPorta dei Leoni\u201d, so called because of the two crouching lions that stand guard over the faith.<\/p>\n<h3>The bell tower and the interior of Matera Cathedral<\/h3>\n<p>Also remarkable is the 52-metre-high bell tower, arranged over four levels, three with mullioned windows and one, the fourth, with single-lancet windows, surmounted by a four-sided pyramidal spire.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The interior, remodelled in the Baroque period, has a Latin-cross plan with three naves<\/strong> separated by columns with figured medieval capitals.<\/p>\n\n<p>In addition to the celebrated stone nativity scene created in 1534 by Altobello Persio, the basilica preserves numerous treasures, including a Byzantine fresco depicting the <strong>Madonna della Bruna with Child<\/strong>, by the \u201cMaster of the Bruna\u201d, perhaps Rinaldo da Taranto (13th century), and the \u201cLast Judgement\u201d, fragments of a fresco cycle of which Hell and part of Purgatory remain, dating from the 13th and 14th centuries and discovered during restoration work.<\/p>\n<p>The finely carved wooden choir, made in 1453 by Giovanni Tantino, is beautiful, as is the large altarpiece on the high altar, \u201cVirgin and Child with Saints\u201d, painted by Fabrizio Santafede in 1580.<\/p>\n<h3>Opening hours and ticket price for Matera Cathedral<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Opening hours<\/strong>: daily from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm.<br \/>\n<strong>Ticket price<\/strong>: \u20ac1. The work is a pictorial transposition of his novel, but it also contains a dedication to the <strong>memory of Rocco Scotellaro<\/strong>, a Lucanian poet, friend of Levi and major witness to rural civilisation.<\/p>\n\n<p>The canvas depicts Lucanian peasants while also narrating three phases in the poet\u2019s life.
