A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, <strong>Buda is rich in monuments, churches and museums, and is considered the true soul of Budapest. <\/strong>There are several ways to reach the top of Buda, and one of the most charming is certainly the <strong>Sikl\u00f3, the small funicular built in 1870 <\/strong>\u2014 departures every 10 minutes \u2014 located at the end of the Chain Bridge in Clark Square. South of the old fortress rises <strong>Gell\u00e9rt Hill, a place rich in history and legend<\/strong> \u2014 it is said that magical rituals once took place in the woods on the hill \u2014 and an extraordinary panoramic spot that attracts many visitors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The hill takes its name from Saint Gerard, the bishop<\/strong> who, in 1064, was locked inside a barrel filled with nails and rolled down this hill by pagan Hungarians who opposed his work of conversion to Christianity. It is still unclear whether this is legend or fact, but <strong>a bronze statue has been placed on the site of his martyrdom in memory of the sacrifice of the missionary bishop. <\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4942\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4942\" style=\"width: 375px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4942\" src=\"https:\/\/www.10cose.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/statua-liberta-collina-gellert-budapest.jpg\" alt=\"Il Monte Gell\u00e9rt, l'altra collina di Buda\" width=\"375\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.10cose.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/statua-liberta-collina-gellert-budapest.jpg 375w, https:\/\/www.10cose.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/statua-liberta-collina-gellert-budapest-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4942\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gell\u00e9rt Hill, Buda\u2019s other hill<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At the top of the hill stands the <strong>Citadella<\/strong>, a defensive structure built by the Austrians after the uprisings of 1848\u201349 to control the city, although in reality it never performed any military function.<\/p>\n<p>The interior of the Citadella can be visited \u2014 9 am\u20138 pm; October\u2013April 9 am\u20135 pm \u2014 for a fee, but it can easily be skipped. What is unmissable, however, is the enchanting landscape offered to visitors, among the most beautiful in the city.<\/p>\n\n<p>Another monument with strong symbolic value is the <strong>Statue of Liberation<\/strong> of 1945, dedicated to \u201c<em>those who gave their lives for the independence, freedom and prosperity of Hungary<\/em>\u201d, commemorating the end of the Nazi occupation.<\/p>\n<p>The 14-metre-high statue depicts a female figure holding a palm branch in her hands stretched towards the sky. At the woman\u2019s feet, a symbol of victory, are two other figures symbolising progress and the fight against evil.<\/p>\n<p><strong>After so much walking, you can treat yourself to a break by stopping at one of the three thermal baths hosted by the hill: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.10cose.it\/budapest\/bagni-termali-budapest\">the beautiful Turkish-origin R\u00e1c and Rudas Baths and the elegant Gell\u00e9rt Bath.<\/a><\/strong>[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"wpb_wrapper td_block_separator td_block_wrap vc_separator tdi_40  td_separator_solid td_separator_center\"><span
